English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

As on obtaining a reservoir of water flooded on all sides there is no use for a small reservoir of water. So A Brahmana, who obtains enlightenment, has the same use for all the Vedas, or say no use at all.

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Just as small ponds lose all use once a vast, full lake is found, the knower of God has no need of the rites of the Vedas.

What is Krishna saying?

This verse shows the result of becoming free of the gunas and opposites. For the great soul who has realised God, all the merit-giving acts described in the Vedas — sacrifice, charity, austerity, pilgrimage, vows — become like small ponds beside a great lake. He is beyond the gunas, free of attachment and aversion, established in the eternal, without craving for acquiring or keeping, and ever devoted to God.

Step by step

  1. 1

The realised soul does not reject good acts; he simply has no personal purpose left in them.

  2. 2

Pleasures and desires are endless — until you let go of them; then they come to an end.

The small pond and the great lake

In a small pond, washing hands muddies the water for bathing, bathing spoils it for laundry, and laundry spoils it for drinking. A vast lake stays clean whatever you do in it. The one who has found God is like that lake, and so needs no small ponds.

Why it matters

It shows what completeness looks like: someone who needs nothing more from any ritual or pleasure, because he has found the source.
