What is Krishna saying?

The previous verse was about staying unaffected while doing one's duty; this one is about staying even in the favourable and unfavourable situations that arrive through destiny. 'Abhisneha' is the identification that says, 'If my things stand, I stand; if they fall, I fall.' The steady one has none of this toward body, mind, family or wealth, even while outwardly in contact with them. He does not celebrate the pleasant or resent the unpleasant, because he sees clearly that changing situations can have no real connection with his unchanging Self.

Step by step

  1. 1

Rejoicing (abhinandana) means gladness in the mind, expressed in words and celebrated outwardly; resenting (dvesha) means wishing the unpleasant had never come and would quickly go.

  2. 2

The Self never changes and body-mind change naturally; the disturbance happens in the intellect only because of identification with the body.

  3. 3

A limited intellect cannot contain the infinite, but when it merges in God nothing else remains in it — that is the intellect being established.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

Rising and falling with one's money

Swamiji describes the ordinary attitude: when my things are intact I feel intact, when they are spoiled I feel ruined; when money comes I feel big, when it goes I feel killed. This identification is 'abhisneha', and the steady one has none of it.

money

Watching your portfolio and feeling your self-worth rise and fall with each market swing is exactly the 'abhisneha' Swamiji describes.

Why it matters

Good and bad situations will keep coming; freedom lies in not tying one's sense of self to them.
