Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Overwhelmed by grief, Arjuna lays down bow and arrows and sinks into the chariot — such is the power of attachment (moha).

What is Krishna saying?

Having argued with reasons and scripture that war is the root of every evil, that the family will be destroyed and hell will follow, Arjuna makes a firm decision not to fight. On the very battlefield he had entered with enthusiasm, he puts down the Gandiva with his left hand and the arrow with his right, and sits down in grief right where he had stood to view the armies. Swamiji traces this to one cause: once the chariot was placed before Bhishma and Drona, attachment woke up and filled his heart, so that he even saw his own death as a good thing.

Step by step

  1. 1

Arjuna's arguments sound reasonable, but they arise from attachment, not from clear discernment.

  2. 2

The one who came ready to fight now sits in despair — this reversal is the work of moha.

decisions

When fear of hurting people we love takes over, we can build a very convincing case for quitting something we know is our responsibility.

Why it matters

The chapter ends with Arjuna collapsed; his despair sets the stage for Krishna's teaching, which begins only when Arjuna turns to him.
