Chapter 2 · Verse 13

Like childhood, youth and age — so is a new body

dehino'sminyathā dehe kaumāraṃ yauvanaṃ jarā।

tathā dehāntaraprāptirdhīrastatra na muhyati॥ 13॥

English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

Just as boyhood, youth and old age, changes in this physical body do not affect the soul likewise is the change to another body. Wise man never gets disturbed about this.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

As the embodied one passes through childhood, youth and old age in this body, so it passes to another body; the steady one is not deluded by this.

What is Krishna saying?

The phrase 'in this body of the embodied' itself shows the body and its owner are separate: the owner is the seer, the body is the seen. We do not grieve when the body goes from child to youth to old; in the same way we need not grieve when the Self moves to another body. Swamiji explains that bodily stages belong to the gross body, while moving to a new body is a stage of the subtle and causal bodies. Through all the changes we still know 'I am the same one who was a child' — proof that the Self itself does not change. The steady one (dhira), who knows real from unreal, is never confused about body and embodied.

Step by step

  1. 1

The body begins dying from conception; each stage 'dies' to give way to the next, ending in a new body.

  2. 2

Birth and death are the nature of the body, not of us; our life is beginningless and endless.

  3. 3

We keep taking bodies only because we keep assuming new attachment; if we stop grasping new ties, freedom is already natural.

Changing clothes

We change many clothes, yet changing clothes does not change us. In the same way, passing through many bodies, our existence stays exactly as it is.

Dreaming as a child, youth and old man

A person sees himself as a child in dreams during childhood, as young in youth and as old in old age. This shows the subtle body changes along with the gross body.

Why we forget past lives

Just as after a stroke or in extreme old age the mind loses what it knew, the great shock at death and birth wipes out memory of the previous life — yet the sense of 'I am' remains.

self-image

Look at a photo of yourself at five and at fifteen: almost nothing of that body remains, yet you say without hesitation, 'That was me.' The one who says it has not changed.

Why it matters

If we calmly accept growing up and growing old, the same understanding removes the fear of death.
