Arjuna Viṣāda Yoga · The Yoga of Arjuna's Despondency

On the brink of war, Arjuna sees his own family on both sides — and collapses in grief.

What is happening here?

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

After thirteen years of exile, Duryodhana refuses the Pandavas even a needle-point of land, and war becomes certain. Vyasa gives Sanjaya divine sight, and blind Dhritarashtra asks him what happened at Kurukshetra. Sanjaya describes Duryodhana approaching Drona, the armies, and the blowing of conches on both sides. Arjuna then asks Krishna to place his chariot between the armies; Krishna sets it before Bhishma and Drona and says 'behold these Kurus'. Seeing kinsmen everywhere, attachment wakes in Arjuna — his body gives way, he argues that war will destroy the family and bring sin, and finally lays down his bow and sits in the chariot.

Why it comes hereयह अध्याय यहाँ क्यों

The Gita begins not with teaching but with a crisis. Swamiji notes that despondency becomes 'yoga' only when one is turned toward God: Duryodhana and others also grieved, but being turned away from God, their grief was not yoga. Arjuna's grief, facing Krishna, became the doorway to the Gita. Krishna himself deliberately awakened Arjuna's hidden attachment ('behold these Kurus') so that Arjuna would become a seeker — just as the commotion of churning curd brings out butter.

Questions this chapter answers

  • ?What did my sons and the sons of Pandu do at Kurukshetra? (Dhritarashtra, 1.1) १)
  • ?How can we be happy by killing our own kinsmen? (Arjuna, 1.37)

Verses to begin withमुख्य श्लोक

1.1

"What did my sons and Pandu's sons do?"

Blind Dhritarashtra asks Sanjaya what happened on the field of Kurukshetra — and his very words reveal the split between 'mine' and 'theirs'.

1.25

"Partha, behold these Kurus assembled here"

Krishna places the chariot before Bhishma and Drona and says 'see these Kurus' — deliberately awakening the family attachment hidden in Arjuna.

1.28

Seeing his own people, Arjuna's body gives way

Faced with kinsmen on both sides, Arjuna's grief shows in his body: limbs fail, mouth dries, the Gandiva slips, his mind reels.

1.47

Arjuna casts aside his bow and sits down

Overwhelmed by grief, Arjuna lays down bow and arrows and sinks into the chariot — such is the power of attachment (moha).
