The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारBlind Dhritarashtra asks Sanjaya what happened on the field of Kurukshetra — and his very words reveal the split between 'mine' and 'theirs'.
What is Krishna saying?
The Gita opens with a question from Dhritarashtra. Kurukshetra is called a 'field of dharma' because the gods performed sacrifice there and King Kuru did austerity there; even a war is fought on holy ground, keeping dharma in front. Swamiji points to the words Dhritarashtra chooses: he calls Duryodhana and the others 'mine' (mamakah) and the Pandavas simply 'Pandu's sons', though the Pandavas treated him like a father. What is inside a person comes out in his speech — this partiality, this sense of 'these are mine, those are others', is what brought grief to his whole family.
Step by step
- 1
Whatever work you do, keep dharma in front of you and do it for the good of all, not only for your own comfort.
- 2
The feeling 'these are mine, those are others' — in a home, a village, a country or a sect — breeds quarrel, not love.
- 3
Duryodhana wanted war for the kingdom; the Pandavas came to fight only out of dharma — obedience to their mother Kunti.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तChurning curd
When curd is churned there is commotion, and butter comes out. In the same way, the commotion born of 'mine' versus 'Pandu's' led to the war, and the commotion in Arjuna's mind drew out the butter of the Gita.
Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींfamily
A parent who quietly treats one child as 'really mine' and a step-child as 'the other one' plants the same division Dhritarashtra did — it shows in small words long before it shows in big fights.
Why it matters
The whole war — and so the whole Gita — begins from one inner division: 'mine' and 'not mine'. Watching that division in ourselves is where learning starts.
