Chapter 1 · Verse 28(with 1.29, 1.30)
Seeing his own people, Arjuna's body gives wayस्वजनोंको देखकर अर्जुनके अंग शिथिल हो गये
dṛṣṭvemaṃ svajanaṃ kṛṣṇa yuyutsuṃ samupasthitam॥ 28॥

The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारFaced with kinsmen on both sides, Arjuna's grief shows in his body: limbs fail, mouth dries, the Gandiva slips, his mind reels.
What is Krishna saying?
Arjuna says 'svajanam' — my own people — and includes both armies in it. Dhritarashtra saw 'mine' and 'Pandu's'; Arjuna sees no such split, and grieves that whoever dies, on either side, is family. Yet the same Arjuna who a moment ago lifted his bow in valour on seeing Dhritarashtra's sons is now overcome by faintheartedness on seeing his kin. The worry about the war's outcome spreads through his whole body: his limbs go slack, his mouth dries, he trembles, his hair stands on end, the Gandiva — whose twang frightened enemies — slips from his hand, his skin burns, and he cannot even stand.
Step by step
- 1
Arjuna's grief is wider than Dhritarashtra's: he fears for both sides, not only for his own sons.
- 2
The same person can 'see' in two ways — with valour one moment and with faintheartedness the next — depending on what the mind is attached to.
- 3
Inner worry and grief do not stay inside; they show up in the body.
What could this look like today?
Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींanxiety
Before a hard conversation with a parent, your mouth goes dry and your hands shake — the body often reports the mind's conflict before words do.
Why it matters
This is the point where Arjuna's inner conflict becomes visible; the rest of the Gita is the cure for exactly this state.
