Sages equate a learned and humble brahmana, a cow, an elephant or even a dog, or a lowly (outcaste), as these have a vision of God, in all of them.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

The wise see the one same Supreme in a learned, humble brahmana, a cow, an elephant, a dog and an outcaste.

What is Krishna saying?

Swamiji makes a careful distinction: the verse says the wise are sama-darshi (equal in vision), not sama-varti (equal in dealings). Among a brahmana, an outcaste, a cow, an elephant and a dog, differences in behaviour are unavoidable — worship is offered to the learned brahmana, milk is taken from the cow, one rides the elephant. Yet in all of them the same Supreme is fully present, and the sage's vision rests on that. So his love, care and wish for their good never differ. Real samata comes when another's sorrow becomes one's own sorrow and another's joy one's own joy.

Sama-darshi (equal vision)

  • Sees the one Supreme in allसबमें एक परमात्मतत्त्व देखता है
  • Same love and care for allसबके प्रति समान आत्मीयता, हित
  • Dealings appropriate to eachव्यवहार यथायोग्य

Sama-varti (equal dealings only)समवर्ती

  • Treats all outwardly the sameसबसे बाहरी बर्ताव एक-सा
  • Like death (Yama), which treats all alike
  • Goes against scripture and social order

Step by step

  1. 1

Equality of feeling, not of outward dealings: 'Keep non-duality always in feeling, never in action.'

  2. 2

While one longs for one's own pleasure, samata will not come however hard one tries; when the heart asks 'how can others be happy?', it comes by itself.

  3. 3

Start at home: let no one in the family suffer even a little because of me, however much I must bear.

  4. 4

Pointing a lost traveller to the road or a thirsty person to water brings an immediate peace — a small taste of this equal vision.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

The limbs of one body

We feel equal ownership and care for every part of our body, yet treat them differently: we bow with head and hands, not feet; we apologise if our foot touches someone, not our hand. Different treatment, same belonging — and any hurt limb gets equal attention.

The ant and the sugar

An ant picks out a grain of sugar mixed in sand. So the discerning vision of the wise picks out the one real Presence pervading this changing world, in every creature.

The monkey and her baby

A mother monkey clings to her baby's body even after it dies — yet when food comes, she eats it herself and chases the baby away. Possessive love (mamata) is really self-love; while it remains, samata cannot come.

workplace

A good team lead gives different people different tasks, pay and responsibility — but wishes every one of them well equally, including the one who annoys her. That is equal vision with appropriate dealings.

Why it matters

It clears up a common confusion about 'equality': the Gita asks for equal love and well-wishing toward all, which is harder and deeper than identical treatment.
