English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

My nature is overwhelmed with the vice of faint-heartedness and my mind is confusedwith regard to my duty. I entreat you, tell me what is decidedly good for me. I am your disciple. Do instruct me, who have taken refuge, in you.

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Confused about dharma and overpowered by weakness, Arjuna asks for what is decisively good for him and takes refuge in Krishna as His disciple.

What is Krishna saying?

Krishna's clear words make Arjuna accept that his withdrawal is a kind of cowardice against his nature, yet he still cannot decide: killing family looks like sin, while fighting is a kshatriya's duty. So he asks not just for advice on duty but for his own certain good (shreyas). Realising that one asks such things of a guru, not a charioteer, he drops the pride of a chariot-owner and becomes a disciple. Then he goes further and takes refuge, wanting to hand over the whole responsibility for his welfare. Swamiji notes his surrender is not yet complete — he still says 'teach me' and soon declares 'I will not fight' — which is why Krishna must later say 'take refuge in Me alone' (18.66).

Step by step

  1. 1

The real aim, one's true good, awakens only when a person becomes dissatisfied with their present state and cannot stay in it.

  2. 2

Four steps, each raising the other's responsibility: asking, praying, becoming a disciple, taking refuge.

  3. 3

One who is fully surrendered has no 'I will or I won't' left; he does whatever the refuge has him do.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

The nursing baby's medicine

When a baby who lives only on its mother's milk falls ill, it is the mother who takes the medicine, not the child. Arjuna wants to depend on his guru so completely that the whole responsibility for his welfare falls on the guru.

career

Someone comfortable in a job never asks what they truly want from life; often it takes a crisis that makes the old situation unbearable before the real question gets asked.

Why it matters

This is the turning point of the Gita: Arjuna moves from arguing to asking, and the teaching can begin.

2.2

Where has this weakness come from?

Krishna asks Arjuna how such faint-heartedness arose at this critical hour — it befits no noble person, leads neither to heaven nor to honour.

2.9

'I will not fight' — and silence

Having spoken, Arjuna tells Krishna plainly, 'I will not fight,' and falls silent.

18.66

Leave the support of all dharmas and take refuge in Me alone

Giving up reliance on all dharmas, come to Me alone for refuge. I will free you from all sins; do not grieve.

18.73

My delusion is gone; I will do as You say

By Your grace, Achyuta, my delusion is destroyed and I have regained memory; free of doubt, I stand ready to do as You say.
