Yoga is the true skill in action

English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

Endowed with equanimity, one frees the self in this life from good (virtue) and evil (vice) alike; therefore, devote yourself to this Yoga of equanimity; skill in action lies in (the practice of this) Yoga.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

One endowed with evenness is freed from both merit and sin here itself; so devote yourself to Yoga — Yoga alone is skill in action.

What is Krishna saying?

The one established in evenness, while still living, is untouched by merit and sin — not because he stops acting, but because he is freed from their fruit. Swamiji insists the phrase means 'Yoga is the skill in actions', not 'skill in action is Yoga'. If skill were Yoga, a clever thief would be a yogi; and even skilful good deeds would bind one to their fruit. True skill is when actions, which by nature bind, become liberating — and that happens only through evenness. So this is not a definition of Yoga (that was 2.48) but a statement of its glory.

Step by step

  1. 1

The self is by nature free of merit and sin; they cling only when we connect ourselves with the body and other unreal things.

  2. 2

You are always already in evenness — that is why you can know both pleasure and pain as they come and go. Only attachment and aversion hide it.

  3. 3

What binds is attachment and aversion, not the action being good or bad.

  4. 4

Actions, however excellent, have a beginning and an end; how can the perishable give the imperishable? Evenness has no beginning or end.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

The lotus leaf in water

A lotus leaf is born from water and lives in water, yet water does not cling to it. So too one with evenness lives in the world and remains untouched by it.

The skilful thief is no yogi

If 'skill in action is Yoga' were the meaning, a person who steals with great skill and care would be practising Yoga. That is absurd — so the right reading is 'Yoga is the skill in action'.

Like the all-pervading God

Merit and sin go on happening throughout the world, yet they do not touch the all-pervading God. In the same way they do not touch one who stays constantly in evenness.

work

Today 'yoga is skill in action' is often quoted to mean 'be excellent at your job'. By Swamiji's reading, a highly efficient but manipulative professional is skilled, not a yogi. The skill the verse praises is staying free of attachment and aversion while doing the work — which can go together with doing it well, but is not the same thing.

Why it matters

It corrects a very common misreading and shows what makes action liberating: not efficiency, but evenness.
