Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

All beings will speak of your lasting disgrace, and for an honoured person disgrace is worse than death.

Even ordinary beings with no tie of friendship or enmity to Arjuna will say he was a coward who turned from his duty. Swamiji notes that the more someone is famed for excellence, the more lasting both their fame and their disgrace. Disgrace is worse than death for such a person because death only means life has run out, with no fault involved, while disgrace comes from one's own fall from dharma and duty.

Why it matters

It distinguishes a natural loss from a self-caused fall: the second is far heavier because it comes from abandoning duty.
