Chapter 2 · Verse 27
Death is certain for the born — do not grieve over the unavoidable
jātasya hi dhruvo mṛtyudhrruvaṃ janma mṛtasya ca।

English
Sadhaka-SanjivaniDeath is sure of him who is born, and rebirth is assured of him who is dead. You should not, therefore, grieve over the inevitable.
The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारDeath is certain for whoever is born, and birth for whoever dies; since this flow cannot be stopped, you should not grieve.
What is Krishna saying?
Continuing the 'even if' argument, Krishna says that the stream of birth and death has run from beginningless time and will go on without end, and no one has the slightest control over it. Arjuna has no means to save Dhritarashtra's sons from death, nor to stop their rebirth. Swamiji clarifies that verses 26-27 are not Krishna's actual doctrine but the view of those who take body and Self as one; even on that view, grief makes no sense. Everything in the world keeps leaving one form and taking another — this flow never stops.
Step by step
- 1
Grief and worry arise only because we do not give weight to our own discrimination.
- 2
Change is necessary: without it a child could not grow up, the ignorant could not learn, the sick could not heal, a seed could not become a tree.
- 3
At death the body lies before us while its owner departs — giving weight to this plain experience ends worry and grief.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तSunrise and sunset
Everyone knows that the sun that rises will set, and the sun that sets will rise, so no one grieves at sunset. In the same way, if Bhishma, Drona and the others die with their bodies, they will be born again with bodies.
Grieve only for the impossible
Swamiji quotes a saying: grieve only over what should not have happened; but what cannot happen never does, and what must happen will.
Rama consoles Tara
When Vali died, Rama turned the grieving Tara to this very experience: the body made of five elements lies before you, but the soul is eternal — for whom are you weeping? Knowledge dawned in her and she asked for devotion.
What could this look like today?
Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींloss
We don't mourn every sunset or every graduation that ends a college life; we know the next phase follows. Swamiji's point is that grieving over the unavoidable only adds pain without changing anything.
Why it matters
Grief over loss and worry about future loss both fade when we honour what we already know: that change is certain and cannot be prevented.
