atha cainaṃ nityajātaṃ nityaṃ vā manyase mṛtam।

English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

O mighty-armed, even if you suppose this soul as constantly undergoing birth and death, even then, you should not grieve over it.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Even if you believe the Self is constantly born and constantly dying, you still should not grieve.

What is Krishna saying?

With 'atha cha' and 'manyase' Krishna takes up the opposite view for argument's sake. The true position is that the Self is never born and never dies; but even if one accepted the contrary, that it is born and dies all the time, there would still be no reason to grieve. Whatever is born will die and whatever dies will be born, and no one can overturn that rule.

The seed that never stays the same

A seed sown in the earth softens, sprouts, grows into a tree and finally dries up. It never stays one way for a moment: leaving each form is its dying and taking the next is its being born. The body is just like this seed, being born and dying every moment.

Why it matters

Krishna shows that grief has no footing even on the listener's own assumptions, not only on the final truth.
