What is Krishna saying?
Verses 13–19 describe, in five groups, the devotee who has reached perfection through the four means; this first group (13–14) gives twelve marks. Whatever anyone does to him, the devotee feels no hatred, since he sees his Lord pervading every being and takes even harm as God's auspicious plan. More than that, he is actively friendly and compassionate — friendliness to the happy and virtuous, compassion to the suffering and sinful. He claims nothing as his own, not even body, mind and intellect, and does not count his good qualities as his own. He knows favourable and unfavourable situations, but they raise no disturbance within him.
Step by step
- 1
Every being is a part of God, so any ill-will toward a being is ill-will toward God.
- 2
The one who causes pain deserves more compassion than the one who suffers it — he is committing a new wrong.
- 3
Friendliness and compassion appear only among the devotee's marks, not the karmayogi's or jnani's.
- 4
Knowing pain is not a flaw; being disturbed by it is.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तPain without disturbance
If, by past karma, the devotee's body falls ill, he will feel the physical pain, but no inner disturbance arises in him.
Shoes on a stony path
One who walks in shoes fears no pebbles or thorns; likewise for a contented mind there is happiness everywhere. Swamiji cites this from the Bhagavata for the mark 'ever content'.
The king's son begging
A king does not like his son begging from others. So God does not like it when the soul, His part, hopes for something from the perishable world; dear to Him is one who looks to no one else.
What could this look like today?
Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींsocial media
When someone mocks you online, the verse asks not just for no counter-attack, but for goodwill toward them — they are the one adding harm to their own account.
Why it matters
Even an ordinary seeker should hold that one who harms him is purifying him of past wrongs; in the realized devotee this becomes friendliness toward all beings.
