Do your duty, always unattached

tasmādasaktaḥ satataṃ kāryaṃ karma samācara।

English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

Therefore, perform duty efficiently without attachment, for by actions without attachment, man attains the Supreme.

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Therefore, constantly free of attachment, do well the work that is your duty — by acting without attachment a person attains the Supreme.

What is Krishna saying?

The realised person has nothing left to gain from acting or not acting, yet work goes on through him for the good of the world. 'Therefore', Krishna tells Arjuna, act the same way. Attachment — the pull toward things of a different nature from our real self — is what causes downfall, not action. It comes from taking 'I am the body' and 'the body is mine' as true. Actions come and go, but attachment stays in the mind continuously, which is why Krishna says 'always unattached'. When we work only for others and want nothing back, the old debt to the world is repaid, no new debt is created, and freedom comes on its own.

Step by step

  1. 1

Attachment, not action, is what makes a person fall.

  2. 2

Duty means giving up self-interest to meet others' rightful needs, as far as one is able — and everyone is free and able to do it in every situation.

  3. 3

Serving others removes present attachment; wanting nothing removes future attachment.

  4. 4

'Samachara' means doing duty with great care, enthusiasm and promptness — a little carelessness can obstruct karma-yoga.

The office furniture

At an office you get a chair, desk and paper to do the office's work — not to take home as your own. Likewise the body and all our belongings are given to us for serving the world. The work is for the office and the salary is for you; the work is for the world, and yoga with God is your 'salary'.

Volunteers at a fair

Volunteers at a fair serve pilgrims all day and want nothing in return, so at night no one's memory troubles them. Whoever works for others and wants no honour or praise is likewise not haunted by the world.

The actor playing Harishchandra

An actor playing King Harishchandra does all of Harishchandra's actions, but never believes he is the real Harishchandra, and drops the role when the play ends. A karma-yogi's doership, too, lasts only as long as the action.

roles

A senior manager who can sweep the floor at a volunteer event without feeling 'this is beneath me' is holding the role only while doing the role — exactly Swamiji's point about the lecturer who can also clean a room.

Why it matters

It turns the ideal of the realised sage into a practice anyone can start: work for others, want nothing, and stay alert against attachment.

13.21

Attachment to the gunas drives rebirth

Only the self identified with the body becomes the enjoyer of the gunas, and attachment to them causes birth in higher and lower wombs.

18.47

One’s own duty, though imperfect, is better

One’s own dharma, even without merit, is better than another’s done well; doing the work set by one’s own nature, one incurs no sin.
