What is Krishna saying?
Here ‘dharma’ means one’s duties, since the passage just before speaks of natural work and svadharma. Krishna does not mean abandoning duties themselves: after hearing this, Arjuna said ‘I will do as You say’ (18.73) and fought. He means giving up reliance on them and the burden of deciding what is right and wrong: leave that decision to Me. Taking refuge in Him, with the self and not merely with mind and intellect, is the essence of all practices; He is both the means and the goal. ‘I will free you from all sins’: if after taking refuge your moods and conduct have not changed and you feel unworthy, do not worry, for that shortcoming is no longer yours to fix.

- 1
Those who rely on dharma keep coming and going (9.21); relying on God alone, there is no need to decide one’s dharma oneself.
- 2
‘Ekam’ here means exclusive, answering the ‘one’ means Arjuna asked for in 3.2 and 5.1: among all paths, exclusive refuge is the chief.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तKarna’s chariot wheel
When Karna’s wheel sank into the earth, he appealed to Arjuna’s sense of dharma not to shoot, and Arjuna held back. Krishna reminded Karna how six great warriors together had killed Abhimanyu, and told Arjuna to shoot. Had Arjuna decided dharma by his own judgement, he would have erred; he left it to Krishna.
The devoted wife
Swamiji compares the surrendered devotee to a devoted wife who has no work of her own: she cares even for her body for her husband’s sake, and takes his family name as hers. Likewise the devotee offers name, caste and everything tied to the body at God’s feet, and becomes fearless and free of worry.
What could this look like today?
Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींdecisions
Stuck in a loop of ‘am I making the right choice?’ The verse’s relief is not ‘stop doing your duty’ but ‘stop carrying the burden of being the final judge’. Do your part and leave the verdict to Him.
Why it matters
Swamiji calls this the most secret essence of the whole Gita: the means and the goal are the same, and the seeker is released from anxiety about both.
