Sadhaka-SanjivaniAn eternal fragment of My own self having become an embodied soul, in the world of life, draws to itself the (five)senses with the mind for the sixth, which are abiding in nature.
The idea
Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivaniसाधक-संजीवनीपर आधारित सारThe self that has become the jiva is My eternal part, yet it draws to itself the mind and senses, which belong to prakriti.
What is Krishna saying?
The self is a part of God. By identifying with body, senses, breath and mind it has ‘become’ a jiva, a role like an actor’s, not its real nature. God does not merely consider it His own; He knows it to be His own, and there is not the slightest part of prakriti in it. The mind and senses belong to prakriti and remain in it; the jiva’s mistake is to pull them towards itself and take them as its own. The simplest and best practice, Swamiji says, is to change one’s sense of ‘I’ and ‘mine’: ‘I am God’s’ and ‘God alone is mine’.
Step by step
- 1
Give the world’s things to the world and God’s to God: that honesty is liberation, and taking both for oneself is the dishonesty called bondage.
- 2
Three things to accept: the body is not mine, since I have no control over it; I need nothing; I have nothing to do for myself.
- 3
The farthest thing from us is the body and the nearest is God, but desire, mineness and identification make it look the other way round.

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentaryव्याख्यामें स्वामीजीके दृष्टान्तThe lion cub among sheep
A lion cub raised among sheep takes itself to be a sheep, but never becomes one. When another lion shows it their shared likeness, it knows itself. Through ‘Mine alone’, Krishna reminds the jiva that it is His part and was never really prakriti’s.
The actor playing Meghanada
An actor tells thousands of spectators ‘I am Meghanada, Ravana’s son’ and acts the part fully, yet inside he always knows it is a role. A seeker should likewise do his duties in the world’s theatre while inwardly remembering ‘I am God’s’.
What could this look like today?
Modern analogy · not from the sourceआधुनिक उदाहरण · मूल ग्रन्थसे नहींidentity
Intern, founder, daughter, team captain: play each role fully, the way an actor plays a part, while underneath knowing ‘I am God’s’. The roles change; that does not.
Why it matters
This is the chapter’s second subject, the jiva. It names the single mistake behind bondage and the single shift that ends it.
