Chapter 11 · Verse 33

They are already slain — be merely the instrument

English

Sadhaka-Sanjivani

Therefore, arise and win glory in conquering the foes, and experience the pleasure of the affluent kingdom. These warriors stand already slain by Me; and you are merely an instrument, O Savyasacln (Savyasacln-s-One who can shoot arrows with the left hand also).

The idea

Summary based on Sadhak Sanjivani

Put in your full strength, but do not take yourself as the cause; what is to happen is in the Lord's hands.

What is Krishna saying?

Having shown Arjuna that the opposing warriors will not survive even without him, Krishna tells him to rise and win glory 'for free'. The glory and the kingdom are also what was bound to happen; if Arjuna takes them as won by his own effort, he gets bound to the fruit. Calling him Savyasachi, the archer who shoots with both hands, Krishna asks him to give the fight everything he has, yet to be only an instrument. Swamiji stresses that being an instrument does not mean doing less; it means doing everything carefully and fully, without the pride of 'I did it'.

Your part

  • Use all your strength, skill and care
  • Do your duty in the situation you are inप्राप्त परिस्थितिमें कर्तव्य करना

Not yours to claim

  • The result and the credit
  • The pride of 'I am the doer'‘

Step by step

  1. 1

Gain and loss, praise and blame are in the Lord's hands; do not tie yourself to them.

  2. 2

Pride in one's own strength is what delays realization; without that pride, success is immediate, because God is ever-present.

  3. 3

Bondage is something we produce by doing; liberation and love of God are already given (svatah-siddha).

Examples Swamiji gives in the commentary

The cowherd boys and Govardhan

When Krishna lifted Govardhan, He asked the cowherd boys to prop it with their sticks, and they began to think their sticks held it up. Krishna lowered His finger a little, and even with all their strength they could not hold the mountain. The seeker should likewise give everything, but credit only the Lord's grace.

The cow with four teats

A calf drinks from only one teat, yet the Lord gave the cow four. In the same way He is showering grace on us from every side; we only have to be an instrument.

exams

Prepare for the exam with complete sincerity, but don't let the rank become the story of your own greatness — or of your worth if it goes badly.

Why it matters

It removes both laziness and ego at once: full effort, no doership — and that is enough for one's uplift.
