The path of Karma Yoga
How ordinary work — a job, studies, family duties — becomes a path to freedom, step by step as Swamiji explains it.
- 1
Action cannot be avoided
No one can remain without action even for a moment, and giving up duty does not bring perfection. So action is better than inaction.
- 2
Action is yours, the fruit is not
The department of action is in our hands; the department of results is under prarabdha. Protect others' rights through your duty and give up your own claim.
- 3
Work for others is yajna
All duty done for others' good is yajna and does not bind; only action done for oneself binds. Everything we have is received, and is meant for the service of others.
- 4
Stay even
Act established in yoga, giving up attachment, even in success and failure. Yoga turns binding actions into freeing ones.
- 5
Action becomes akarma
Done without desire, 'mine' and attachment, purely for others, action becomes akarma: one acts fully yet remains untouched.

The fruit of karma yoga: peace
Giving up the desire for the fruit, the karma yogi attains lasting peace; giving up desire, 'mine' and 'I', one attains peace.
