Why read this?
It is one of the earliest attempts in any culture to list the basic kinds of things that exist. Its categories and atomism shaped Nyaya-Vaisheshika realism for over a thousand years.
Questions it answers
- ?What are the basic kinds of things that exist?
- ?Is the world made of indivisible parts?
- ?How does understanding the world relate to dharma and liberation?
Key teachings
Framed as an inquiry into dharma
The text opens by announcing an inquiry into dharma, defined as that which yields both worldly flourishing and the highest good. The analysis of reality is presented as serving this goal.
Categories (padartha)
Reality is analysed into categories: substance (dravya), quality (guna), action (karma), universal (samanya), particularity (vishesha) and inherence (samavaya). Later authors added absence (abhava) as a seventh. The name Vaisheshika comes from vishesha.
Nine substances
The substances are earth, water, fire, air, ether (akasha), time, space, self (atman) and mind (manas). Selves are many and distinct.
Atomism
Earth, water, fire and air are composed of eternal, partless atoms (paramanu) that combine into larger wholes. Later Nyaya-Vaisheshika authors connect this combination to the unseen force of karma (adrishta) and, in time, to Ishvara.
Link to Nyaya
Vaisheshika supplied ontology and Nyaya supplied epistemology and logic; the two were later treated as one system, Nyaya-Vaisheshika.
